The Long Road Back: A Reliever's Journey After Tommy John Surgery
For Tyler Mattison, the Detroit Tigers' reliever, the battle against Tommy John surgery was just the beginning. While losing an entire season to the procedure was challenging, the real test came in the aftermath, as he fought to reclaim his pre-surgery form and confidence.
Mattison, a 26-year-old right-hander, returned to the mound in 2025, but the road to recovery was far from smooth. He described the experience as "interesting" and "frustrating" at times, struggling to regain his command and feel for the game. However, by the end of the season, there were signs of progress, with Mattison striking out 24 batters in just over 18 innings and posting an impressive 2.95 ERA in the final two months at Triple-A Toledo.
"It was great to be back out there, contributing to the team's success," Mattison said. "That late-season success gave me the motivation to push even harder during the offseason and earn my spot in big-league camp."
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite his late-season surge, Mattison didn't truly feel like himself until the following offseason. He explained, "Finishing that uncertain year of rehab and finally being able to train and throw without restrictions was a huge relief. I felt normal again, and that's when I knew I was back."
The Tigers showed their faith in Mattison by adding him to the 40-man roster during his rehab in 2024, a move that highlighted their belief in his potential. However, after being dropped from the roster following the 2025 season, Mattison chose to return, eager to prove his worth once more.
"The Tigers have been incredible to me," he said. "I have great friends here, and the staff has always supported me. I'm excited to be back and show what I can do."
And this is the part most people miss... Mattison's journey is a testament to the resilience and determination required to overcome injuries in sports. His upcoming appearance in the Grapefruit League on Sunday marks a significant step forward, and Manager A.J. Hinch believes that if Mattison performs well in 2026, a path to Detroit is almost guaranteed.
"His removal from the roster doesn't diminish our faith in him," Hinch said. "We believe he can take that next step, and we've made that clear to him. Relievers can come from anywhere, and we're excited to see what he brings to the table."
