A groundbreaking development in space exploration: Ontario's Bubble Technology Industries has been entrusted with a $5.5 million contract from the Canadian Space Agency to create a revolutionary tool for astronaut safety. The Canadian Active Neutron Spectrometer (CANS) is designed to be a compact, self-sufficient device, measuring neutron radiation exposure during space missions. As Canada and its allies venture further into space, this innovation will play a pivotal role in monitoring astronaut health and safety.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized the technology's dual benefits, stating it will not only protect astronauts but also provide valuable insights for those on Earth in the nuclear and medical sectors, who may encounter radiation exposure.

This project builds upon Bubble Technology Industries' previous achievements. They had successfully completed a Phase A CSA contract, valued at $505,000, to develop a prototype for the CANS. Additionally, BTI supplied 'bubble monitors' to the CSA, which are radiation-detecting tubes used in the Radi-N2 experiment on the International Space Station, benefiting astronaut Chris Hadfield.

Radiation, a form of energy emitted as rays, electromagnetic waves, or particles, poses significant risks to astronauts. Cosmic radiation can lead to radiation sickness and long-term health issues, including bone marrow damage and cancer. Neutron radiation, comprising about 30% of space radiation, is a critical focus of the CANS, as it targets and monitors this specific type of radiation.

Founded in the Ottawa Valley in 1988, Bubble Technology Industries specializes in defense and aerospace hardware and software, with a strong emphasis on radiation detection and protection. Their FlexSpec product line, a neutron radiation sensor kit, is versatile, integrating into vehicles, marine ships, backpacks, and aircraft.
